The Salt Typhoon saga continues to unfold, the latest victims confirmed to have been compromised are Charter and Windstream. AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen are also confirmed to be impacted at this time. The attack has been attributed to Chinese state-sponsored threat actors that obtained text messages, voicemails, phone calls and wiretap information of active U.S law enforcement investigations.
It is unclear if these providers were included in the nine providers confirmed by White House deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technologies on December 27th or if these are additional providers which would bring the total to eleven.
More information should be forthcoming, however at this time lawmakers have taken notice of this attack as several high profile individuals in the U.S government were compromised as a result of the attack. New legislation/regulations could be enforced in the near future which would, hopefully, make telco providers take action to better secure their networks and customer data.
