Norsk Hydro, (one of the world’s largest aluminum producers), has suffered a loss of profits due to a recent cyber attack. Additionally large US cities are struggling with ransomware. Baltimore and Atlanta have both fallen victim recently and they are not alone. These attacks were noteworthy in that they did not target the people but rather vulnerable computers. In the past phishing was usually the means of distributing ransomware but in these cases uneducated users not the intended targets. Security vulnerabilities have real world consequences and as more and more essential service and infrastructure move toward the web it will be critical for businesses and government organizations to take securing their data their systems seriously.
